Tool and Cutter Grinders

Milling cutters, tool bits and other cutting tools are sharpened by using a tool and cutter grinder. This is a very versatile machine. It is used to perform the grinding of complex shapes as well as surface and cylindrical grinding.

The manually operated machine needs a high level of skill. The machining cutters are of many shapes and types and hence require flexibility in use. The grinder has several dedicated fixtures that permit cylindrical grinding operations. Also, different complex angles can be ground. The vice on this grinder can swivel in three planes. The table can move in the longitudinal direction as well as sideways. The head is adjustable in the horizontal plane and can swivel.

The contemporary toll and grinder is a CNC machine tool. This has around 5 or 6 axes. This is used to create drills, end mills etc that are extensively used in the metal cutting industry. Tool and cutter grinders can be altered to manufacture precision machine components. When used for such purposes, they are called as a CNC grinding system. Such systems have a wide application to create parts for automotive, medical, aerospace and other industries. Even if the material to be ground is extremely hard and exotic, it is not a problem for the grinding system. Also, as the machines are multi-axis, it is possible to create very complex shapes and sizes.

The tool and cutter grinders are of many types like Monoset type, CM2A, single lip grinder, M40 Tool grinder, TG 5 plus CNC and TR-520 CNC. Universal cutter grinder is a deckle type cutter grinder. This is used to grind engraving cutters of different angles and turning tools. The M-40 Tool and Cutter Grinder is ISO 9000 certified. The Monoset type grinder permits to accurately grind and sharpen complex tools and cutters. The CM-A model has 3 axis linear scales, camera device system, digital readout system and rotation graduation. This is ISO 9002 and CE standard certified. The TG5-PLUS model has an IPC with 650M 5 axes controller with 15 inch LCD and is ISO 9001 quality assurance certified. The TR-520 model has a 5HP spindle motor, HSK-50 spindle taper and a heavy duty linear slide way.

A radius grinder or radius tool grinder is a predecessor to the CNC tool and cutter grinder. This is used to grind very complex tool forms. Similar to the CNC grinder, it can be used for grinding of spherical surfaces. The tool is made up of three parts – the holding fixture, work table and the grinder head. The grinder head has a tilt, movement into the work piece and vertical movement. These three degrees of freedom are set statically and left fixed during the operations. The work table is T-slotted. This is an X-axis table positioned on the top of a radial fixture. The X-axis is mounted on the top of a radius table and this results in complex and precise radius grinds. The holding fixtures that are usually used are the collect or chuck fixtures. These fixtures have separate Y movement for precise depth setting and end mill sharpening.
