The term furnace is actually used for the purpose of referring to the industrial furnaces. These industrial furnaces have been in existence from a long period of time and have been in use for a variety of purposes. The different types of the industrial purposes include metal extraction process from the specific score. The industrial furnaces are also used in the oil refineries and other industries like the chemical plants. The best example of its use can be the heat source for the purpose of fractional distillation in the fractional distillation columns.

The term furnace is also used for the directly fired heater. These directly fired heaters are usually used in the chemical industries. These are also used for supplying heat to the reactions that are chemical reactions which occur during the processes like cracking.

Furnace has now become a commonly used term for most of the metallurgical furnaces across the world. There are furnaces which are uniquely built for the purpose of running the fire tests. These are done to qualify for the fire protection aspects of the industrial products. These furnaces are mostly used in the construction sector. The industrial furnaces are mainly directly fired heaters. These furnaces are used as an equipment for the purpose of heating the reactions involved in the industrial processes. The heat thus produced by the furnace can also be used as a reactor which is meant for providing the heat required for the concerned reaction. The designs of the furnaces are actually dependent on the type of function it performs. The various tasks performed by a furnace range from heating, combustion air providing to a wide variety of other functions. The furnaces of all kinds have some common features which enable a lay man to identify the industrial furnaces. There can be the presence of multiple burners in a specific furnace which are vested with the purpose of heating a set of tubes and the burners are arranged in cells.

The burners of the furnaces can be of different shapes, like the floor mounted burners, wall mounted furnaces, roof mounted burners or other shapes, depending on the design of the furnace. The flames of the burner heat the tubes and the tubes in turn heat the fluid that is present in the first part of the concerned furnace which is popularly known as the radiant section.

The firebox which is the chamber where the combustion function takes place is also heated to an extent by the heat produced in the furnace. The heating fluid is then passed along the through the tubes which further helps in the heating process which is carried out in the desired temperature. The distribution of the heat is quite even. The gases that are thus formed by the combustion process are known as the “flue gas”. These are used in many other processes too. Most of the furnaces are designed to provide one convection current which is then used for recovering the heat. Furnaces stand to be a major part of industries worldwide.
